You don't want to wait until you've already found a home and made an offer to begin the mortgage approval process.

Contact a lender to review your likely maximum purchase price calculation, and get a Mortgage Pre-Approval Letter. A Mortgage Pre-Approval Letter is always preferred over a Pre-Qualification Letter, because it is more thorough and more reliable, shortens the mortgage application and approval process, and provides the ability for a fast closing if one is desired.

A Mortgage Pre-Approval has many advantages:  you and
your Buyer Agent will have confidence in your price range and your ability to obtain a mortgage approval, and when you submit an offer, the sellers will know they have a serious buyer who has taken the time to arrange for mortgage financing first.
